In a nutshell because it works!
Personal training gets results and it can change your life – it changed mine in more ways than one.
I remember spending the majority of my late teens and twenties unhappy with my shape. I was never overweight but I didn’t like what I saw when I looked in the mirror. I was pear shaped. Small on top with a bum and thighs. My nickname when I was younger was “Big Bum”. The Kardashians werent around back then. If they were it might have been a different story!
Shopping for clothes should have been fun but I would come home depressed. Still to this day I have an adversion to changing rooms, those glaring lights zoning in on all the areas that you don’t like. I tried walking, running, eating not eating! I lost weight and I was delighted with myself. I was getting thinner, that number on the weighing scales was going down. But had my shape changed? No! Was I happy with the way I looked? Not really.
After years of frustrations and tears I took control of the situation and looked for help. I flipped open the Golden Pages and I rang and booked myself a personal trainer. It was worth a shot. What did I have to lose and I know I had to try something different. We all know the definition of insanity “repeating the same behaviours and expecting a different result”.
Back then having a pesonal trainer was so taboo. Only the rich and famous had pesonal trainers. I nervously went for my first consultation and immediately I was at ease and knew I had made the right decision. I signed up for 20 sessions which became 40 sesssions which became 60 sessions – I was hooked, I was broke but I didn’t care – I was happy for the first time in a long time.
My pesonal trainer was a legend. Plus I fancied the pants off him! With the right support and encouragement, with a tailored exercise and nutritional plan and the expertise that my trainer had, I was amazed how you could change your shape. It didn’t happen overnight it took time and I had to believe in the process,which I did.
Over the coming months I worked hard to put on some lean muscle with consistent training. I had to work exceptionally hard on my diet, this was a massive learning curve. Big bowls of pasta, the weekend takeaway and the alcohol were no longer going to cut it! I didn’t realise how my nutritional choices were having such a massive effect on my weight and shape. There has never been a more true statement than the saying “You can’t out train a bad diet”.
With the right changes to my diet and the increase in lean muscle from the training I could feel my metabolism come alive. I was a fat burning machine! I started to lose weight but this time it was body fat and not muscle. My shape was changing. My shoulders were getting broader, my bum and thighs more toned and I could see definition as it was no longer hiding behind the fat. My shape was more balanced.
I was now heavier on the weighing scales, yes heavier (light bulb moment!) but I looked and felt brilliant. That number on the weighing scales was no longer my marker of success it was no longer my friend – good riddance.
I had so many light bulb moments along the way ……….
- Cardio alone won’t change your shape.
- Weights alone won’t change your shape.
- Nutrition alone won’t change your shape.
... but put the three of them together and voila you have the magic formula!!
My philosopy now is simple; eat unprocessed food as much as possible (don’t get obsessed with it), lift some weights (gotta lift heavy) and move (in whatever way that floats your boat).
Repeat this day after day, week after week, year after year and that’s the magic formula.
Personal training changed my life so much so I ended up becoming one so I could help other people achieve their goals and dreams. I’ve seen firsthand the tremendous changes that people are capable of and I’ve seen the smiles and tears of joy that come along with people transforming their lives and getting results they never thought possible.
That was 20 years ago and even though I’m now a personal trainer I still train religiously with personal trainers for the same reasons my clients do.
